Are your classes and training sessions something you tell yourself you have to do? Or are they something you get to do?
Here are a few tips to help you approach your training with a more positive mindset:
1. Do things you enjoy.
It’s hard to maintain a positive mindset about something that you don’t really enjoy. Sometimes, we have to do those less enjoyable things anyway. But when it comes to your training, you have plenty of options. If you don’t like your current routine because it’s not much fun, then it’s time to make a change. When you do activities you enjoy, you’ll look forward to them so much more.
2. Be consistent and flexible.
Building and keeping a consistent training routine takes time to establish. And when you’re in the process of forming that habit, it can seem like your training has become a bit of a grind. You may reach a point where there’s too much structure. If you go for weeks without missing a single class, how do you feel on that day that you finally miss one?
For some, it might make you feel like you’ve failed in some way. Taking an all-or-nothing approach to your training makes it hard to keep a positive mindset. Instead, aim for consistency but still be flexible. If you miss a Monday class, go on Tuesday instead. If you get stuck in morning traffic, try to fit in a class at lunch. If you have meetings scheduled all day, get back to the mats the following day.
3. Keep a training log or journal.
Being physically active has so many health benefits. No matter how you felt before a class, you probably will feel better after. Keeping track of how you feel in a training log can help you identify patterns in your training, as well as your everyday life. On the days you train, your mind might be in a better place. Journaling either on paper or your phone helps you see the link between your mind and your body. Not only will you feel the benefits, but you’ll also be able to record and track positive changes over time.
