Your-First-Martial-Arts-Class-Rolles-Gracie-AcademyYou’ve taken the first step to getting started with martial arts and booked a class. Great! At this point, you might be wondering, “Now what?” or “What’s that first class going to be like?”

If you’re nervous or feeling intimidated about your first class, you’re not the only to ever feel this way. On the day of your class, it’s not a bad idea to show up a few minutes early. You can introduce yourself to the instructor, meet a few people who will be in the class, and figure out the layout of the school.

Here are a few more things to know before your first martial arts class:

1. You’ll get a workout.

Many people start martial arts because of the fitness aspect. Just remember, the physical part of your class might be tougher than you’re expecting. Working harder than you had planned doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Remember, this is new! And you’re getting a full-body workout. You’ll probably do some movements that you’ve never done before. And you’ll likely be sore the day after your class. Just remind yourself that it’s all part of taking on something new.

2. You’ll meet new people.

Many people wind up sticking with a martial arts practice because of the strong sense of community. Even if you’re feeling hesitant to get started, remember that martial arts appeals to all fitness and experience levels. No matter what your personal goals may be, the thing you will all have in common is your interest in training martial arts. Show up ready to meet some likeminded people, and you’ll do great.

3. You’ll learn something new.

Remind yourself that the point of this first class is to start something new. Tell yourself before the class even starts that you’re there to learn. You can’t possibly be an expert yet, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Even if you feel like you’re a half-step behind everyone else, take a deep breath, and stay focused on your instructor. Martial arts is all about personal improvement, not comparing yourself to your classmates. Go in with an open mind. Focus on yourself and what you can learn.
