Ways-to-Overcome-Feeling-Intimidated-Rolles-Gracie-AcademyGetting started with a martial arts practice can be intimidating. Especially if you’re new to martial arts or if it’s been a while since you regularly worked out. If you’re feeling nervous about getting started, you’re not alone in feeling this way. Intimidation is a common reason that can prevent people from stepping foot on a mat.

However, if you can overcome this initial intimidation, you’ll be able to experience the physical and mental benefits of a martial arts practice. Here are a few suggestions for overcoming feeling intimidated and get you on your way to achieving your personal goals:

1. Focus on yourself.

Sometimes the initial intimidation we feel about starting something new comes from the pressure that we put on ourselves to perform. Rather than approaching a new opportunity as a challenge and the chance to learn something new, we immediately start comparing ourselves to other people.

As you’re getting started, put aside any expectations you have about your skills, fitness, and ability. Remind yourself that the goal isn’t to be the best in the room. Instead, focus on your individual improvement. Challenge yourself, work hard, and remember to have some fun.

2. Try a group martial arts class.

Walking into any gym and trying to come up with an effective workout can also be intimidating. Especially if you have no idea where to start. Maybe you’ll walk on a treadmill for a few minutes. And try a few machines. But after a few sessions like this, it’s not the most fun or results-producing workout options.

A group martial arts class is a great solution. Not only are group classes full of supportive participants, but you also have a knowledgeable instructor to guide you through class. All you have to do is show up ready to challenge yourself and work hard.

3. Recruit a buddy.

If you like the idea of group classes, but you’re still wary of getting started, then recruit a buddy. Ask a friend or family member to join you for the classes. You’ll feel more comfortable getting started already knowing at least one person. Plus, you’ll automatically have an accountability buddy who can keep you from skipping out on a class (and vice versa).
