Martial arts is a full-body workout. However, martial arts also has the unique ability to affect our mental health positively.
When the physical and mental aspects of martial arts work together, this mind-body connection increases mindfulness. Other activities, like reading, do this as well. However, reading is a sedentary activity. The mindfulness boost is more significant with martial arts because of the physical element; the body and mind work together.
Here are a few ways that you can get the most out of mindfulness through martial arts:
One of the simplest ways to create a strong connection between your body and mind is through your breathing. When you focus on inhaling and exhaling, the to-do list will gradually begin to disappear. You can bring all of your attention to your martial arts class.
2. Be aware of negative thoughts.
The best way to deal with negative thoughts is to become aware of when you have them. It is impossible to stop a negative thought from happening. But what you can control is how you treat that thought. For example, you can reframe a negative thought into something more positive.
3. Focus on yourself.
When you’re distracted by others in your class, it’s tough to maintain a mind-body connection. Remind yourself that the only person you need to compare yourself to is your self. Don’t worry about the progress of your fellow students and stay focused on yourself.
Each time you practice martial arts, you take small steps to make positive changes to your overall health. With your body and mind focused on a single activity, you are training yourself to be more mindful. It becomes a moving meditation.
When you become more mindful, you experience less stress. And when you experience less stress, your overall health improves.
