Set-SMART-Jiu-Jitsu-Goals-Rolles-Gracie-AcademyWe’re just a few days away from starting a new year, which makes now a great time to look ahead and think about goal-setting. Here are a few tips on how to set SMART Jiu-Jitsu goals for the coming year:

S: Specific

If your goal is “to get better at Jiu-Jitsu,” this might be a challenging goal to work on. Not because we don’t expect you to get better but because the goal itself is too vague. There is not a clear way of knowing when you’ve gotten better. Set a goal that is specific and clearly defined.

M: Measurable

In goal-setting, you also need a way to measure your progress. To get better, you need a way to track your improvement. By starting with a specific goal, you can usually find a way to make sure that it’s also measurable. For example, if your goal is to attend more martial arts classes, make your goal measurable by saying that you will “attend class three days each week.”

A: Attainable

Sometimes we get carried away during the goal-setting process and set unattainable goals. And while it’s great to dream big and challenge yourself, a goal that’s too challenging might end up backfiring. If your goal is beyond your reach at this time, you might become less motivated to work hard. To stay motivated and excited about your martial arts goals, be realistic with what’s possible this year, and set your goals accordingly.

R: Relevant

Another essential element of the goal-setting process is to choose a goal that you’re genuinely excited to work on. For example, some people set goals around competing. But if competition isn’t your thing, then don’t feel pressured to do the same. Set goals relevant to you and what you want to work toward in your martial arts practice.

T: Time-Based

Once you have a specific, measurable, attainable, and relevant goal, it’s time to create a timeline. What’s the timeframe for when you will accomplish your goal? Creating a plan with target dates helps you figure out the steps needed to get results. You can work backward from your deadline and set smaller checkpoints for yourself that will keep you motivated and making progress toward your bigger goal.
